The one thing holding many individuals back from obtaining their private pilot license is fear.

We all have fears. Whether or not we plan to admit it or not, there are a lot of things causing fear in our lives. This is especially true when we get ready to start anything new. New is frequently exciting, but it surely may also be scary. Fear of failure is generally the top thing on our list.

Think back to when you got your driver's license. Did you fail the very first time? If you did I expect you can actually remember what that felt like. If you researched the word "down" in your dictionary, you'd have seen a photo of yourself right next to the meaning.

Nobody enjoys failure, and fear of failure is without doubt one of the most terrible fears in the world.

Okay, great...now that we've established that...how can we overcome it?

Let's review some methods to get by our fear of failure.

1. Consider the chance you are missing.

Pretend for a second that you really need to fly, but your fear of taking the examination stops you from doing what you really want. Now picture what life is going to be like without having the ability to do this very thing that you love so much. Look, if you want to learn to fly, surely there is a good reason why you're even considering it. Focus on that rather than the fear and this will likely go a long way to alleviating that fear.

2. Take a good look at the other alternatives

If you do not have your Private pilot license, then what. Well for starters you will become a frequent flyer on commercial airlines. That means you will be on their schedule, and cannot go where you want whenever you want. You'll be at the mercy of others. There are other modes of transportation. You may choose to drive, take a train or ride on a bus. If that notion makes you ill to your stomach, concentrate on it. It won't be long before you say goodbye to your fear of failure.

3. What's the worst case scenario?

Imagine for a minute that you fail the PPL exam. What's the most awful thing that will happen? They can't tell you that you cannot take it for a second time. You can easily take the examination all over again. It is not like this is a one time offer. Think of how many people wouldn't be driving cars if that were so. If you don't pass the test, so what. At worse, you must wait just a little longer to get your PPL.

4. Be aware of The Benefits Of Failure

Failure is definitely an amazing learning opportunity. We can improve on things after we understand what we did incorrect. Failure certainly beats getting into the cockpit of the plane before you're ready.

5. Create A Contingency Plan

Know what you are going to try and do next in case you do fail. You should already be planning in advance on taking more lessons, getting extra flight time and rescheduling. Failing and giving up should never go together.

6. Taking Action Is The Key

Leaping in and taking action may help you eliminate your fear more rapidly than anything else. The more you delay, the more afraid you're going to become until you get to a point where you're unable to take your examination at all.

7. Learn From The Ancient Greeks

Ancient Greeks were known to burn their own boats, giving themselves no alternative but to move onward. They could not turn back. I don't know what you have to do to be able to burn YOUR boat but do it. Getting on the phone and scheduling an exam is usually all it requires so do it.
