Here’s a few down-to-earth tricks for making your day at the flea market even more pleasurable.
Nearly all flea markets are outdoors so you might want some sunscreen, a hat and some shades. A cool drink tucked away in the bottom of your bag is also a great idea. For my part, I take a shopping cart so I can carry my new found goodies about with no difficulty. There are some very reasonably priced carts that fold up and easily fit into the trunk of your car.
I also make sure I put on a comfortable pair of walking shoes so I won’t have to end my day early due to tired feet.
Another great tip is to walk to the very end of the vendor’s stalls and work your way back towards the entry. This way you will have the heaviest weight from things you have purchased when you are nearest your car. The majority people begin at the entrance of the flea market so if you begin at the rear you will be likely to see a lot of bargain priced odds and ends before too many other people do.
Also, because it is absolutely acceptable to barter with the vendor, I typically take some small change in my purse so I don’t have to pull out large notes during the haggling. An extra thing to remember is that you are more likely to get a better price later in the day when the vendor is eager to boost his overall earnings for the day. By the end of the day though most vendors are very prepared to reduce the prices on the items they have remaining. They certainly don’t want to have to bundle up any more stuff at the end of the day than they absolutely have to. The down side to this approach is by going to a flea market first thing in the morning you are likely to be able to take advantage of the choice before everybody else has.
There are various ways to reach a deal on the price of any given item. You can ask the vendor what the lowest price is that they will take for a given item. You can also offer to pay a certain price and see if they will take you up on the bid. Alternatively, if you want to offer $10 then have the correct money in your hand for them to see. Seeing the cash will often persuade them to accept your offer. Be fair with the vendor but don’t forget that you may also get the exact same thing in the next isle even cheaper.
So good luck, have fun and happy bargain hunting!
