Meeting The Ladies Who Trade, Michelle Marquez

For many years the world of finance was heavily dominated by men with the only women who featured being those working in the admin or fraud departments, ensuring that the male traders were being compliant. Thankfully however the landscape of this industry, much like many others, has changed greatly and now features a great many women who trade alongside the boys. We were fortunate enough to have a sit down with securities trader Michelle L Marquez, who has been trading now for over 10 years. Let’s take a deeper look into why Michelle chose this industry, and why she loves her job so much.

On Women in the Industry

Michelle believes that the world of finance is a far better place since the introduction of women and that industries like trading are now a level playing field between both genders, with no favoritism at all. The same can be said behind the scenes with arbitration commissions or the compliance group for example, featuring equal amounts of men and women.

Love of the Job

Michelle speaks glowingly about when she was a young teenager and she loved nothing more than getting her hands on the Wall Street journal, to find out what had been going on in the financial world. She tells me that she had this love for finance from a young age and therefore her only career choice was to become a trader. Michelle’s love for the job has never wavered and she tells us that she is still as excited to go to work everyday as she was 10 years ago.

Best Aspects of the Job

Traders can be painted as a selfish bunch but in Michelle’s case this could not be further from the truth. In fact Michelle actually speak at length about how much she loves making money for her clients, and how that is the greatest buzz that she gets in the job. Another factor of the  job which she loves is when she makes an accurate forecast or prediction, which she says serves as a nice reminder that she is exactly where she belongs. She does of course enjoy the money which she makes, but she does stress that this is not the most important thing for her.

Struggles Within the Position

Michelle has never faced any issues of gender within the workplace and she says that the only difficulties which she has ran into has been when the markets have not moved in her favor. She does stress however that this is not a job for everyone and that there are many who do not have the strength of character that is required or survive for any great length of time. For Michelle however, she is loving life as a trader and plans to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
